Fair use rationale for Image:Base Esperanza.gif

[edit]

Image:Base Esperanza.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Territorial claims

[edit]

Argentina is a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty, which suspends territorial claims of nations in the region of Antarctica. This is part of what is commonly referred to as "land of everyone and of no one." from the standpoint of national (non)ownership. However, this article does not discuss this condition, and instead portrays (incorrectly) this location as a part of Argentina, contrary to the conditions of the treaty signed by Argentina, and could be viewed as a veiled Argentine propaganda mechanism. Moreover, the location of this base is on territory previously claimed by other countries and those claims are also suspended under the treaty. Recommendation: add an applicable note/section/paragraph that describes the nature of suspended national claims in Antarctica under the prevailing treaty. Such mention would also be appropriate for other suspended-claim locations in the Antarctic region. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 181.201.85.174 (talk) 15:36, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

LRA 36 Radio Nacional Arcángel San Gabriel, Base Esperanza

[edit]

This shortwave radio station, which broadcasts at least part time on 15476 Khz, should have at least a mention at this website. Sources that can be used to prepare such a listing include reception posts from Glenn Hauser's "World of Radio" (via DX Listening Digest which is available online), as well as other internet based sources such as (but not limited to) these posts: [1], and [2] (which is a bit older, but shows an ongoing on air presence), etc. This would would indicate some of the following, if not more Wikipedia worthy information: when the station broadcasts, its transmitter power, a picture of QSLs (if any), etc. In other words, it's not just 50 or so people who live at that base-- it's a few more souls who reach out to the world from close to the South Pole.... Due to time constraints on my life, I can't put together a complete package right now for submission. But if anyone knows anyone who knows anything about shortwave, perhaps they can put it together and submit it as a section called 'Radio Communications at Esperanza Base' (or something like that). Good Dx to all and 73s.... Shawn Fahrer 2603:7000:7506:9400:A54C:A494:73CB:7921 (talk) 00:42, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. I wonder how noteworthy this radio station is because that is what will warrant its inclusion on WP. The sources you supplied are blogs which are not normally acceptable on WP, even though such blogs are frequently used on many articles. However, a brief mention, even if not properly sourced, might be useful. If someone had time, I think their energies would be better utilised in a wideranging clean up of what is already in this article, which is sorely needs: more needs to be taken out than put in. Settlements in Antarctica

[edit]

The article says this is "one of only two civilian settlements in Antarctica (the other being the Chilean Villa Las Estrellas)"... but Villa Las Estrellas is actually in the South Shetland Islands, so shouldn't the article be stating that Esperanza is the only civilian settlement in Antarctica?
