[edit]Is that capital B in the middle of his name correct? RickK 21:02, Jul 11, 2004 (UTC)
Yes, that's the way he writes it. Look at this image from his webpage. Pyrop 22:04, Jul 11, 2004 (UTC)
Also, the official Haibane Renmei website spells it ABe. It's not incorrect, it shows up spelled Abe a lot of the time, and really, his real name isn't Yoshitoshi ABe at all, it's 安倍吉俊, but he writes it "yoshitoshi ABe". Pyrop 22:12, Jul 11, 2004 (UTC)
The lowercase y in yoshitoshi is also a running theme. The common spelling is " yoshitoshi ABe " referenced from the the Artbooks and Doujinshi 68.111.232.178 06:35, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

Yoshitoshi ABe → Yoshitoshi Abe – I'm making this move request because I'm growing very tired of having to constantly write (and read) "ABe".
Per WP:UE:
In deciding whether and how to translate a foreign name into English, follow English-language usage. If there is no established English-language treatment for a name, translate it if this can be done without loss of accuracy and with greater understanding for the English-speaking reader.
WP:COMMONNAME analysis:
- Napier uses "Abe Yoshitoshi" in Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke.
- Clements & McCarthy use "Abe Yoshitoshi" in the 2015 The Anime Encyclopedia and remark "He favors unorthodox typography and likes his name to be written with the Y in lower case and the B in upper. We prefer to keep our English-language text readable."
- The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (2021 entry) uses "Yoshitoshi Abe".
- Marc Hairston writing in Mechademia uses "Abe Yoshitoshi"
- ANN often uses "Yoshitoshi ABe" but has had some trouble lately in staying consistent
- Otaku USA used "Yoshitoshi aBe" (???????) in 2022.
- Many other review sites have used "ABe", e.g. Anime Feminist.
My opinion is that we should go with the academics and other tertiary sources in order to "keep our English-language text readable". His own preference is "yoshitoshi ABe", so our current title is a strange compromise anyway. I'm also pretty sure that there is some WP:CIRCULAR going on with some news publications checking Wikipedia to see what the "correct" spelling is. Charcoal feather (talk) 00:08, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
- Support. Contrast bell hooks, whose preference is certain and well-documented. Here, where it's so inconsistent and possibly CIRCULAR, we should default to standard English conventions. WPscatter t/c 01:27, 23 June 2023 (UTC)
